PVC

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

Description

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a thermoplastic polymer made by chain polymerization from the monomer vinyl chloride. PVC is the third most important polymer after polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP).

The PVC plastics are subdivided into hard and soft PVC. For example, rigid PVC is used to make window profiles, pipes and records. Soft PVC contains plasticizers, which lead to an elastic behavior of the material. It is used for cable sheathing and floor coverings.

Properties of PVC

  • Chemically resistant to acids, salts, bases, fats and alcohols.
  • Good insulation properties
  • High hardness (uPVC)
  • Low water absorption
  • Good mechanical properties

Applications of PVC

Raincoats, boots, shower curtains, medical tubing, blood collection bags, packaging, water pipes, cables and wires, low voltage cables, cladding, windows, roofing.
