HDPE

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

Description

High density polyethylene (HDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer made from the monomer ethylene. HDPE is known for its high strength-to-density ratio. The density of HDPE can range between 930 and 970 kg / m3.

Although the density of HDPE is only marginally higher than that of LDPE, HDPE has little branching, resulting in a higher tensile strength than LDPE. With a high strength to density ratio, HDPE is used to make plastic bottles, corrosion resistant piping, geomembranes and plastic wood.

Properties of HDPE

  • Stiffness
  • Strength
  • Toughness
  • Resistance to chemicals and moisture
  • Permeability
  • Easy to process and easy to mold.

Applications of HDPE

Ballistic plates, banners, bottle caps, boats, corrosion protection for steel piping, electrical and sanitary boxes, folding chairs and tables, fuel tanks for vehicles, microwave telescope windows.
